The Planet pillar in action
Spade’s commitment to this pillar focuses on the energy consumption of IT infrastructures as well as the circular economy dimension of the digital sector.
Our commitment to the energy consumption of IT infrastructures
Reducing the impact of hosting
By definition, a data centre is a major energy consumer. That’s why it’s important to ensure that the digital platform is hosted by a data centre with a sound environmental policy – including, for example, the recycling of waste produced (what is done with used servers?), the production of green energy (self-sufficiency in electricity), a policy of soft mobility for its staff, etc.
Lighten the load on digital service media
Is there a policy in place for managing/using media in order to reduce their impact, with criteria for compression and media formats?
The volume of data transferred increases the service’s environmental footprint. It is necessary to offer the media required to display the service in the appropriate compression, in order to improve the service and its sobriety.
Spade’s commitment to the circular economy
Spade does not manage the entire production and maintenance chain for digital projects. We do, however, focus on working with local partners (mainly based in Belgium: Utick, Koalect, Make Me Web, etc.).
Examples of our suppliers’ commitment to the circular economy:
- Our accommodation partner Scaleway is committed to the circular economy. The company works with local and regional partners such as Loxy, an adapted company, which ensures 100% reuse and recycling of IT components. They are also working to extend the life cycle of IT equipment in production by up to 10 years (a period that is generally between three and five years) through reuse and careful maintenance, and are applying the European directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).
-
Infomaniak‘s commitments:
- All waste is sorted and recycled, at all stages of production (except biodegradable waste).
- Rechargeable batteries are used instead of rechargeable batteries for all electronic equipment. Chargers and bins for recovering end-of-life components are available to employees. All electrical and electronic components are recovered and recycled by Swico.
- Printer toner cartridges are recovered and recycled by specialised companies.
- Bulky waste (scrap metal, glass, plastic, cardboard) is collected several times a year and taken to a recovery centre for reprocessing.
- Each office has a waste bin and a waste paper basket for recycling.
